Noise Consultancy

Every organisation comes to us at a slightly different point. To start with, some need a Noise at Work risk assessment because the business has changed, new equipment has been introduced, or responsibility has just landed with a new safety manager. Others already have assessments in place but aren’t confident they fully reflect what’s happening on site, or what’s expected of them.

How we can help

Our role is to help you understand what noise levels people are actually exposed to, what’s working well already, and where attention is genuinely needed - without overcomplicating things.

Starting from scratch, or starting again:

For many organisations, our involvement begins with a Noise at Work risk assessment. That might be a first assessment, or it might be a fresh look where there’s uncertainty about whether existing information is still valid.

Alongside measurement and exposure assessment, we look at the wider picture that sits around noise risk management, including:

How hearing protection is being selected and used

Whether it’s suitable for the noise levels, tasks and working environment

How hearing protection zones and signage are set out on site

Who requires hearing health surveillance and why

What information, instruction and training is already in place

As part of this, we’ll usually highlight practical opportunities to reduce exposure, focusing on realistic, site-specific controls rather than generic lists.

Sense-checking what’s already in place:

We’re often asked to review existing noise assessments or management arrangements where you want reassurance that what’s in place is still right.

Sometimes this follows formal training, where organisations want reassurance through mentoring or shadowing, and a second pair of eyes to confirm they’re on the right track. In other cases, an assessment doesn’t quite sit right, but it’s not immediately clear why. It may also follow HSE engagement, where organisations are asked to demonstrate how noise risks are being actively managed.

In these situations, we can carry out a focused review or gap analysis, looking across areas such as:

The assessment itself and how it’s been put together

Whether noise levels and exposure assumptions are realistic

Hearing protection selection and justification

Signage, zoning and consistency on site

Training and awareness arrangements

Checking that the right people are receiving hearing health surveillance, and that pathways and feedback loops are working effectively

Review cycles and triggers for reassessment

Where appropriate, we can carry out targeted spot checks on site to confirm whether the information aligns with real-world conditions.

Support at any stage

Some clients come to us before assessments are in place. Others involve us once issues have been identified through health surveillance, internal audits or external intervention and you want support in moving things forward.

We’re comfortable stepping in at any stage — whether that’s helping clarify a specific concern, supporting conversations between teams, or putting practical measures in place to strengthen how risks are managed.

This type of support is often where health & safety and occupational health overlap, and where clear, independent input can make a real difference when responsibilities span more than one department.

Practical management and exposure reduction:

Where noise risks are identified, we support clients in developing practical controls and exposure reduction measures.

Our focus is always on what will make a meaningful difference in your environment - prioritising actions that are effective and achievable, without creating unnecessary disruption.

Where engineering or design changes are considered, we favour reducing noise at source wherever possible. This often starts with straightforward, low-cost measures and in-house modifications, rather than defaulting to complex enclosures or generic solutions.

We work closely with engineers, supervisors and operatives during this process, talking through ideas on site and sense-checking proposals before recommendations are finalised, so controls are workable in practice and don’t interfere with production, access or hygiene.

Individual noise risk assessments:

In addition to site-wide assessments, we also carry out individual noise risk assessments where specific needs or concerns exist.

This typically applies to people working in noisy environments who have hearing loss, wear hearing aids, or have been identified as requiring additional consideration to ensure they can continue to work safely.

These assessments are not desk-based or technology-led office assessments. They are carried out on site and are as thorough as a full Noise at Work risk assessment, taking account of:

The individual’s role and tasks

Their working environment and exposure

Existing controls and hearing protection

Communication, awareness and practical safety considerations

The aim is to confirm that risks are being managed appropriately and that reasonable, practical adjustments are in place where needed.

Ongoing support, when you need it:

Noise management doesn’t always stop with a report.

You may ask us to return to update assessments following machinery changes or process modifications. Others get in touch when they’re reviewing hearing protection, speaking with suppliers, or considering new equipment and want an independent view before decisions are made.

We’re happy to provide ongoing support at whatever level is useful - from occasional advice through to longer-term arrangements — and we’re equally comfortable stepping back when that support is no longer needed.

Who we work with:

We support a wide range of organisations, from small businesses needing a one-off assessment to large, multi-site operations looking for consistent, trusted input.

We work across many sectors, which gives us broader insight into how similar noise problems are approached in different environments - and helps us bring proven, practical thinking to each site.

Where an enquiry falls outside our specialist scope (which is rare), we’re always open about that and happy to point clients towards others who are better placed to help.
