Noise and vibration risk management doesn’t stop at measurements and assessments. In practice, there’s often a gap between what’s identified in a risk assessment and what happens through occupational health when you’re trying to manage risks day to day. This is an area where we frequently support organisations that want clearer links between assessment and health surveillance.
We regularly work alongside occupational health providers, either through an NVS associate company or your existing provider, to help ensure vibration and hearing health surveillance arrangements are meaningful and properly aligned with workplace risks.

This can include:
Sense-checking who has been placed into hearing health surveillance and why.
Helping interpret surveillance outcomes in the context of vibration and noise recommendations, and managing daily exposures.
Supporting communication between health & safety, occupational health and management.
Identifying where follow-up actions are needed, and where they’re not.
The aim is to close the loop between what the noise or vibration assessment identifies and what occupational health professionals and results are actually telling you.

Audiometric environments and low-frequency noise
An area that’s often overlooked is the environment in which hearing tests are carried out.
Where surveillance is completed on site — for example, in a room, booth or mobile van — background noise can influence test results. This is particularly relevant where testing takes place:
In industrial buildings.
In yards or loading areas.
Near roads, plant or other sources of low-frequency noise.
Low-frequency noise is harder to attenuate and can travel through walls and generic audiometric booths. In some situations, it can mask the higher-frequency tones used during audiometric testing, affecting the reliability of results.
Where needed, we can carry out focused noise checks — including 1/3-octave analysis — of testing rooms, booths or mobile units, to help confirm whether the testing environment is suitable or whether improvements are needed.

Policy, procedure and management support
Beyond assessments, we can also support clients with the practical documents and systems that sit behind effective noise and vibration management.
This may include helping to develop or review:
Noise or vibration policies and procedures.
Purchasing policies for tools, machinery or hearing protection.
Maintenance arrangements linked to noise or vibration control.
Internal guidance that supports consistent decision-making.
This support can be standalone, or linked to findings from noise or vibration assessments where gaps have been identified.

Support at any stage
Some clients come to us before assessments are in place. Others involve us once issues have been identified through health surveillance, internal audits or external intervention and you want support in moving things forward.
We’re comfortable stepping in at any stage — whether that’s helping clarify a specific concern, supporting conversations between teams, or putting practical measures in place to strengthen how risks are managed.
This type of support is often where health & safety and occupational health overlap, and where clear, independent input can make a real difference when responsibilities span more than one department.
